HILO — Enrollment in the Honokaa-Kealakehe-Kohala-Konawaena Complex Area is up.

Data from the state Department of Education shows there are 9,932 students enrolled this year in the complex area, an increase from 9,803 in 2015-16.

Enrollment in Hilo’s public schools is also up slightly, while enrollment in Puna’s schools remains virtually flat.

The DOE data shows 7,607 students were enrolled in the Hilo-Waiakea Complex Area this month. That’s up from 7,569 in the 2015-16 school year. In the Ka‘u-Keaau-Pahoa Complex Area, 5,353 students are enrolled this year — identical to the previous year.

Statewide, enrollment is down from 180,409 students in the 2015-16 school year to 179,902 students this year.
